Are They Truly Deadly is my own visual interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Devil as versions of one person. Specifically as versions of myself. Each look reflects what I see to be the strongest relationship between myself and the so called ‘sin’ is.

My own fascinations with the ‘sins’ is rooted in questioning the basis of these rules around morality, behaviour and self expression.

The question are they truly deadly asks viewers to consider the idea of these imparted rules and whether there is any merit to the concept of these ‘sins’.

This question is posed to all those who venture through the inner workings of this collection, and therefore, inevitably, the inner workings of my own mind,

Why This Order: A Reference to Purgatorio

The order of these looks were locked in before they were designed.

In Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, the second part of his epic, Purgatorio, contains narrative poems describing his and Virgil’s journey ascending through the levels of purgatory.

Each level is littered with figures of history, and contain specific punishments for those seen to have been guilty of each of the sins.

The order in which I have arranged my collection is the reverse of this ascension, a decline if you will, ending with the Devil, the ultimate symbol of sin.

The aim of this collection is to take the viewer on a journey, through symbolism, repeated motif and visual concept.
