Echoing Memories of the Firstborn
Echoing Memories of the Firstborn is based on core, false and fractured memories of mine and my families. For the garment design I’m looking internally, based in inspired from false or forgotten memories. Whereas, through textile manipulation I will look externally, exploring the broader familial memory and relationship with our heritage.
The personal experience of coming home at a young age after a trip away to my family’s home town, and returning to the unexplainable feeling of unfamiliarity in my own house, is a core memory of mine, a memory of forgetting. I have used these fractured and false memory ideas as inspiration for the design of my look.
Through the textiles of this look I want to explore core familial memories. As a family, we have experienced multiple house fires, memories burnt into our family history. One particular fire destroyed hundreds of mementos and photos my mother had kept for years. Personally, I choose to keep mementos or remember people or experiences through the adornment of tattoos on my body. An attempt at counteracting fragmented memory with permanence.
